Japan: A Map That Feels Alive
The map in FH6 is about 25% larger than FH5’s Mexico, but it’s not just bigger—it’s denser. Tokyo steals the show, reportedly five times larger than any city in previous Horizon games, packed with multi-level highways, tight alleyways, and hidden shortcuts. Out in the mountains, the Japanese Alps offer switchbacks and drifting routes that demand precise control. Cherry blossoms drift across the road, snow slowly accumulates, and each area feels carefully designed, not just copied from real-life locations.

Atmosphere & Visuals That Draw You In
Forza Horizon 6 leans into a moodier, more atmospheric aesthetic than FH5’s bright, sunny style. Nighttime racing in Tokyo glows with neon signs, while coastal roads and mountain passes are bathed in realistic light and weather effects. Reviewers loved the small touches: petals on the road, icy patches in the Alps, and the authentic way light reflects off wet asphalt. It feels alive, like the world is waiting for you to explore.

Progression: Starting From Scratch
The tiered wristband system makes a return, giving newcomers a chance to feel like a true rookie. You start as a “tourist,” working your way through qualifiers to earn access to the full Horizon Festival. It’s a slower, more satisfying progression than jumping straight into superstar events. Fans of the original game will feel right at home.

Driving Physics: Sharper, More Grounded
One of the most noticeable upgrades is in the driving physics. Cars feel heavier and more planted, with improved weight transfer and more realistic drifting. Steering feedback is more nuanced, especially with wheel support: understeer and oversteer are easier to feel and manage. Even controller players report that the handling feels sharper, rewarding precise inputs on tight mountain roads.

Performance & Modes
Preview builds ran at 30fps in Quality Mode, but the full release will include 60fps Performance Mode, promising smoother handling and lower input lag. On Series X, visuals remain stunning in both modes, while Series S and PC offer scalable performance for a wide range of setups.

Criticisms & Concerns
Even with all the improvements, some issues persist:
  • Formula Familiarity: FH6 feels very much like a Horizon game—no radical gameplay overhaul here. Players expecting a total reinvention may be underwhelmed.
  • Technical Hiccups: Foliage pop-in is still noticeable in some preview builds, though next-gen hardware should help.
  • Live Service FOMO: Some community members are wary of cars and events being locked behind limited-time challenges, a trend carried over from FH4 and FH5.
Forza Horizon 6 is shaping up to be a must-play for racing fans, especially anyone who loves Japanese cars, urban street racing, or mountain touge. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, the combination of dense, beautiful environments, refined physics, and return to a satisfying progression system makes it one of the most polished entries in the series.
If you’ve been waiting for Horizon to finally explore Japan, this is the one to grab—just be ready to embrace a familiar formula in a gorgeous, fully realized new world.
